Wherever Your Playing Takes You

An endless list of immortal artists have used a flange effect to create magic. From The Beatles to Pink Floyd to Van Halen, Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers - now, with Vortex Flanger all those sounds are yours for the rocking.

  • Classic flange and tape flange modes
  • Intuitive yet deep control set
  • Stereo I/O

Subtle Woosh to 747 Landing

The two modes in Vortex Flanger are a classic pedal flanger capable of giving you everything from suble chorus tones to classic Van Halen jet flanger swoosh and tape mode which gives you the psychedelic sound of the original flange tones of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. And it does fantastic 'through zero' sounds too!

Famous Flange Flavors

Vortex takes the great pioneers of the 60s and 70s flange and adds a set of deep controls, allowing you to sculpt and time your flange sounds with great precision. Essential for quickly dialing through the rich history of flange pioneers such as Hendrix and Van Halen and sculpting your own twisted sounds.

The I/O You Know

Vortex Flanger has stereo ins- and outs, which is really cool for dual amp set-ups or a double combo attack where ultra-wide flange sounds are needed. Awesome, but not for the faint of heart!

True to Tone

You love tone, so do we, and our design philosophy testifies to that. So whatever route you wanna go, we got your back. With optimized headroom, True Bypass or Buffered Bypass switch and Kill-Dry on/off, this pedal guarantees optimal tonal integrity and zero loss of tone. And, no matter if the pedal is on or off your precious dry sound is always passed through the pedal unharmed in all it's pure analog glory due to an Analog-Dry-Through.

Backstage Pass - All Access

Though flange may be an accidental find and straight from the roaring 60s, tight control is essential if you want to get the tones you are chasing. Vortex Flanger provides a simple, four button lay-out and smart mini toggle to get the job done.

Mini Toggle

You guessed it – this determines the speed of the effected signal. Slow speeds will enhance the jet–like qualities of the effect.

The Feedback knob allows you to feed the modulated signal back into the pedal, which basically gives you more of everything that’s so cool about flanging.

Controls the intensity of the effect. For classic jet flange sounds keep the depth control low. (but do feel free to crank this thing and do your worst/best!)

Delay Time

Determines the pitch of the sweep. Lower setting will give a higher pitch sweep.

Maximum You

TonePrint pedals offer both true- or buffered bypass. It simply means that no matter what your setup or situation, TC pedals give you optimal signal integrity so the 'you' in your playing shines through with unparalleled clarity and definition.

Artists Using Vortex Flanger

by Trevor Curwen

The Vortex is a versatile flanger with plenty of potential variation available from the controls. This is especially true of the feedback knob, which offers variable amounts of both negative and positive feedback. It provides a host of familiar flanging sounds in its standard mode - metallic tonalities and obvious sweeping sounds are all possible. It's the tape option, though, that's perhaps more interesting in dishing up less common sounds, especially so when phase cancellation occurs at the zero point and the sound disappears completely - something that can create strange tremolo-style effects.

Vortex is great for swooshy, classic-rock sounds, but it can also give you whistling birds, grinding industrial machinery, or spiraling staircases of otherworldly tonalities. TC has done an amazing job creating a pedal that can satisfy both the weekend warrior who needs to nail “Unchained,” or the sonic sculptor who revels in the kinds of sounds that would get you kicked out of a bar gig. Tape is the more organic side of the Vortex, and it nails the signature swirl created when two tape recorders are made to drift in and out of phase with each other (typically by manually slowing one machine). The traditional flange sounds you can dial in here are juicy and inspiring, and you can venture into rocket-ship effects and other spacey timbres by simply tweaking the Feedback, Depth, and Delay Time settings. As the most far-reaching flanger pedal I’ve heard in a long time, the Vortex receives an Editors’ Pick Award.

The Vortex flanger is a versatile unit that captures both modern and classic tape-based flange tones. Tape mode is a “through-zero” flange that simulates the original flange technique of running multiple tape decks while offsetting the speed. Flange mode gives uncolored digital response that makes the higher harmonics pop with clarity. With SPEED, DEPTH, FEEDBACK, and DELAY TIME controls, the Vortex can produce effects from the insane warble of Janek Gwizdala’s “Family Of Rats” TonePrint, to the sibilant sweep of Mark King’s “Sweet Minger.”

The pedal’s standard modes can range from smooth to hyper and burbling, depending on how aggressively you toy with the Depth, Speed, and Feedback knobs. But the addition of the TonePrint option and the Tape flange switch really expand the Vortex’s range of voices. The Tape setting sounds great at medium-to-strong intensity for both psych-flavored arpeggios and fast, funk-chord comping. It also works wonders if you want to lend motion to a lingering, fuzz-driven power chord.

This is indeed a very good flanger. The standard flanger setting has a wealth of classic, shimmering, chorus-type flange and jet-flanging tones at your fingertips. (...) TC deserves full marks for once again pushing the boundaries of what is possible with today's technology inside a small stand-alone effect pedal.

I was able to easily dial in a tone akin to Phil Lynott on ‘Waiting For An Alibi’ and began happily riffing away. Of course if you really want to crazy things up it’s pretty easy to get some real space cadet tones going on. Whether you want some metallic zing, or big sweeps you can easily get it from the Vortex.

I’ve been impressed with every TC Electronic TonePrint pedal that I have tested and the Vortex Flanger is no exception, not only does this pedal have 2 great modes (Flanger and Tape) but the amount of variations available simply by beaming a new TonePrint from my iPhone means that you have every type of Flanger effect available in one very reasonably priced pedal.

They've done it again: this is an excellent flanger at a very competitive price. We particularly liked the vintage effect that the 'tape' setting offered, and combined with the pedal's great range of other sounds, its ease of use and solid build quality, it all adds up to a little box that's well worth having in your arsenal. You'll want to start wearing psychedelic floral shirts and staring at lava lamps for hours, but hey, it's a small price to pay.
